According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the New England Patriots are placing the transition tag on strong safety Kyle Dugger. Unlike the franchise tag, the transition tag allows other teams to negotiate with Dugger and set a market price. If a team offers Dugger a contract, the Patriots have the option to match it. Otherwise, Dugger will play out the 2023 season on a $13.81 million transition tag salary and become a free agent entering the 2025 offseason. This tag is less common than the traditional franchise tag. This also means that the Patriots have until Monday to reach a deal with Michael Onwenu before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Onwenu is expected to be one of the most coveted players if he hits the open market.
